Frequenlty Asked Questions...

Which class should I do? Muay Thai or Kickboxing for fitness?

That depends on you and your goals. Both are awesome fitness workouts and will get you in the best shape of your life. If you simply want to get fit or lose weight and you don’t want to learn a new skill, or you want to throw a punch but not get punched back, Kickboxing for fitness is definitely for you. If you want the same great fitness benefits but you also love a challenge, want to learn a new skill or sport and don’t mind coping a couple of light punches, Muay Thai is definitely for you.  If you're doing Personal Training, take your pick, your Gold Coast Personal Trainer will customise your Personal Training session around whatever you like.

Is Muay Thai or Kickboxing for fitness hard to learn?

No it’s not! Muay Thai is a very easy Martial Art to learn because it focuses on simple and effective moves for the ring or self-defense. We teach you at your own pace, make sure you have fun and never throw you in the deep end. We also make learning fun, you’ll be hitting pads and bags on your first session, you won’t be standing in a line punching the air like many other Martial Arts.  A couple of months is all it takes to be comfortable with the basics of Muay Thai, a fraction of the time of other Martial Arts.

Kickboxing for fitness is even easier to learn. Aside from a few quick pointers from your Kickboxing Personal Trainer, there’s almost no technique to learn, just grab a punching bag and get stuck into it. There’s no mind numbing fancy combinations to remember, yet every session is different to ensure you never get bored.

Why should I do Muay Thai over other Martial Arts?

There are hundreds of Martial Arts out there and every Trainer has their own way of teaching it. What’s best for you depends on your goals. Muay Thai Kickboxing doesn’t have any Katas or forms and everyone works on what’s best for them. You’ll never do the exact same move in a line of ten people who are all different sizes and abilities. Aside from a warm up, you will never be punching the air, you will always hit pads or your sparring partners, to ensure you learn realistic moves. We’ll customize each session around you, your goals, your strengths and weaknesses. Our Gold Coast Muay Thai classes are also typically for teenagers and adults, so you won’t be doing a kids class. Although Muay Thai is a 2000 year old Martial Art there is no strict uniforms, yes ‘Sensei’s’ or lengthy bow ins. Every single thing you do will directly get you fit or teach you to fight, we won’t waste your time on anything else. So if this appeals to you, Muay Thai Kickboxing is the best Martial Art for you!

Do I have to be fit to start Muay Thai or Kickboxing for fitness?

No you don’t. Both our Muay Thai Kickboxing and Kickboxing for fitness classes cater to all fitness levels. We are more than happy for you to go at your own pace. All of our Muay Thai Trainers are also Personal Trainers, so we are used to training all types of people.  We cater to all fitness levels and because you’re not in a line up of people like a Karate or Aerobics class no one will notice if you need to take a breather. If you’re not fit we won’t push you hard. The last thing we want is for you to be sore and sorry and quit after one lesson. And no, you won’t feel out of place, as most other people starting out aren’t fit or co-ordinated when they start either! It will only take a couple of weeks until you start feeling fitter, and in a few months you’ll be in the best shape of your life.

How much physical contact is there?

That depends on your goals and your experience. You will never have to go harder than you want to go, and as with fitness work, the physical contact gradually progresses as you do. All Muay Thai Kickboxing classes are touch contact and become harder as your confidence, experience and technique develops. We always put safety first and we are qualified, insured and professional. If you’re after non-contact classes try our Kickboxing for fitness or our Personal Training. At the other end of the spectrum, our fighters spar very hard to prepare them for the ring, ensuring they are always prepared and conditioned when they fight.

Is Muay Thai good for self-defense?

Yes, Muay Thai Kickboxing is one of the most effective forms of self-defense in the world. You will learn from Trainers with first hand experience (in the ring, not the street of course!), so you will only be taught tried and proven techniques. It focuses on simple and powerful techniques that will work under pressure. If you’re strictly after self-defense and not Muay Thai for the ring, please enquire about our self-defense and Personal Training sessions.

How long will it take to have my first fight?

That depends on how hard you train. Typically if someone works hard from day one they’ll have their first fight (with 10oz gloves and no shin guards or head gear) in around ten months. There’s lots of great Gold Coast Muay Thai shows on, all you have to do is put in the work and we’ll do the rest. We always make sure our fighters are fully prepared and we never throw them in just for the experience. Although you can never win them all, we only put fighters in the ring when we feel they are good enough and can win.

Do I have to fight?

No you don’t. We are more than happy to train people for all kinds of personal goals as long as you give your best every session.

What equipment do I need?

Nothing for your first lesson. Come along, borrow our equipment and if you decide this is the place for you, all of your equipment is available to purchase and is always in stock at our Gym shop.

What does it cost and when are your classes?

Fill out the form on the right of screen and we will automatically send you our latest Gold Coast Kickboxing and Muay Thai timetable. We’re open six days a week, we have no joining fees, you don’t need to book and our classes are all great value for money, they’re typically between $5 and $12 a session. Personal Training for all goals is available from 5am to 9pm for around $35 a session.

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is the traditional Martial Art of Thailand. It’s around 2000 years old and like most Martial Arts it is very traditional and cultural. Nowadays, especially outside of Thailand, most Gyms teach it as more of a competitive sport than a traditional Martial Art. It makes it a lot more fun for people to learn and get fit! It’s been in Australia for around 30 years but has only really taken off in the last 10 years or so as more and more people realise the amazing fitness, self defence and fighting benefits it offers. It’s also a great spectator sport with fight shows, including many Gold Coast Muay Thai shows, televised on Foxtel every couple of weeks which has dramatically helped the sports popularity in recent years. Kickboxing is the general descriptive term used for Muay Thai and it’s derivatives, however technically speaking it means no knees, elbows or grappling in a ring fight.
